ABOUT ME
UPDATED 4/6/20
My photography is mainly set around live music (mostly in the Leamington Spa area) but I have also had the occasional attempt at studio portraits with the help of the fabulous 'Phlash Worx' studio in Leamington Spa which is something I may return to.
Musically early days wise I was brought up by my mother and father on a diet of late 50's early 60's rock and roll espicially Elvis Presley (still a favourite of mine), Billy Fury, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry.
My early gigs included the likes of Thin Lizzy, Girlschool, Queen, Status Quo, Saxon, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio and Motorhead, unfortunately this was all way before I discovered the photography angle!
In the summer of 2008 I decided to put my 2 loves of music and photography together and photograph local live music events starting with the 2008 Leamington Peace Festival (followed by plenty of pub and small venue shows) and I also started scribbling down notes for possible reviews at some gigs.
In 2009 the fantastic Assembly opened here in Leamington Spa and I have been lucky enough to get my camera into various shows at this award winning venue photographing the likes of Marillion, Steve Hackett, Thin Lizzy, UFO and Walter Trout to name a few.
I have also photographed and reviewed the Cambridge Rock Festival, The Warwick Folk Festival and the Napton Festival.
Between 2008 - 2013 I photographed and reviewed gigs for the 'get ready to rock' website (links to these can be found in my "LINKS" section), from 2009 to 2019 I reviewed and photographed gigs for The Classic Rock Society Magazine where I was also one of the magazines album reviewers.
The Leamington Courier newspaper and web site have also used my work as well as various bands web sites and publications and I am also part of the team at "HOT MUSIC LIVE" a gig guide and magazine for local live music in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull where I contribute gig reviews, photos and news items (again links can be found on my site).
In January of 2010 I held my first photographic exhibition of live music photography "Sounds and Visions" at The Grist Mill public house in my home town of Leamington Spa.
My second and third "Sounds and Visions" exhibitions were held at the Royal Spa Centre in Leamington in 2011 and 2012.
I have also put on a couple of smaller themed exhibitions titled "Local Bands Local Venues" and "A Black and White Night" and most recently in December of 2013 I held my first music genre exhibition "Basement Blues" based on my photography covering the blues scene which took place at the towns Basement Restaurant where we raised £202 which was split between the Myton Hospice and Down's Syndrome Association.
I have entered my images into various national photographic exhibitions and competitions where my images have been selected and awarded and several of my images have been used on CD/DVD covers and booklets.
Recently (late 2016-2017) I have started to have a go at photographing and designing both CD covers and discs design several of which you will find in my "SPECIAL PROJECTS" gallery.
2018 is a big year for my live music photography as it marked over 10 wonderful years of shooting live music - 2008-2018, and on this journey I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to photograth many of my personal heroes as well as discover fantastic new music mainly around Leamington Spa.
To celebrate I had an exhibition of my best work covering my years of gig photography "ROCK AND ROLL DREAMS COME TRUE - THE LIVE MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY OF ANDREW LOCK 2008-2018" at The Oak House Sports and Social Club in Leamington Spa which raised ££809.35 split between Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice and The Cinnamon Trust - The National Charity for the elderly, the terminally ill and their pets.
The money was raised by a raffle which included items signed by some of the artists represented in my shots and print sales and I had wonderful live performances by local musicians and good friends Steve Walwyn (with Sam Powell and Martin Cure) and Kristy Gallacher.
Now well into 2019 and I have had a strange year in many ways, including having a stroke, a couple of months on the sick and having my usual trouble in relaxing, switching off and overall stress management.
I am taking a good look at dog portraits and dog photography in general as well as looking back over my extensive music archive for inclusion on this website, also must admit I feel the bug for another exhibition in the near future so watch this space.
This lockdown has given me ample time to tidy up my site so loads of new content and a few changes including changing to a mobile friendly version with plenty more unpublished images to come, have only recently got my cameras out having a go at bird photography in the back garden (which is a challange)
Keep safe all.
Hope you enjoy my site and come back soon
Andy

Dreaming of Rock and Roll with Andrew Lock - One of the great things about our local scene is the mutually beneficial collaboration between photographers and performers. Powerful images celebrate strong performances and ultimately get audiences off the sofa into venues. At the same time, photographers are drawn to the drama, colour and style of live performance and relish the intense technical challenge of working with low light and fast action.
If you spend any time around the Zephyr Lounge, the Leamington Assembly, or any of the major local summer festivals. you'll recognise a guy who prowls the boundary zone between stage and auditorium. with his iconic leather hat, blonde mane and dual Nikons. That would be Andrew Lock, well-respected by both musicians and fellow shutterbugs for a fabulous portfolio that includes stunning shots not only international acts such as Marillion, Chantel McGregor, Mostly Autumn and Doctor Feelgood but also local heroes such as Kristy Gallacher and Steve Walwyn.
While these images look great on the screen, there's a special kind of magic to a high quality print. We recently had a chance to check this out when Oak House Sports and Social Club in Leamington Spa hosted Rock and Roll Dreams Come True, an exhibition of some of Andrew's finest work. Through the sale of prints, an auction and intimate live sets from Kristy Gallacher and Steve Walwyn, the evening raised over £750 for the Cinnamon Trust and Zoe's Place Baby Hospice.
So, a fabulous event and another great example of the synergy between live music and photography, making an important difference to the local community. - Paul Englefield
Lovely work - Paul Englefield (KATE AND THRE MOONCATS)
Great pictures...thanks Andrew - Man Made Moon
Thank you for sending me the pictures, i think they are splendid - Tomas Zsigrai (Michael Bublé tribute, Club la Costa World, Costa del Sol.
